Hanuman Jayanti Festival - Full Moon April 11, 2017
OM HUM HANUMATE NAMAH
"Om, I bow to Hanuman who cuts the ego. Let the energy of Lord Hanuman, the manifestation of devotion, service, humility and power resonate within my being. Let the son of the Wind God, the life force, the destroyer of ignorance, The bestower of Grace, open the doorway into infinity, SITA RAM SITA RAM. May the Golden Monkey, Hanuman, take me into his heart, along with Sita and Ram." ~ Jai Uttal
Full Moon in Libra is an illumination of our relationships. Not just with the other but also ourselves. Intimacy and connection begins with devotion, the rawest, deepest part of ourselves surrenders everything to the other, not for glory or gain, but pure love. This selfless love is most symbolically foretold in the story of Hanuman, the monkey god of the Ramayana, the epic tale of light verses darkness in the Hindu cosmology.
Hanuman's tale as told in the epic Ramayana is renowned for its ability to inspire its readers to face ordeals and conquer obstructions in their own lives. At the time of the Ramayana, Hanuman is sent as an advance spy to Lanka, the capital of the mighty demon Ravana's empire. Ravana has provoked Lord Rama by carrying away his beloved wife Sita in order to start a war. During the epic times that follow, Hanuman brings hope and secret messages to the captive Sita, leads Rama's monkey army in the Battle of Lanka and single-handedly kills many demons including Lankini, Champion of the demons. During this time Hanuman is captured by the enemy, only to outwit them with the cunning use of his powers. He returns to find Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana themselves captured by the enemy and about to be sacrificed to the goddess Kali by the sorcerer Mahiravana. In a tale of great daring, Hanuman outsmarts the evil lord into becoming the sacrifice himself, thereby earning the eternal respect of Kali. She appoints Hanuman as her doorkeeper and today many of her temples are seen to have a monkey guarding their doorways.
Because of his bravery, perseverance, strength and devoted service, Hanuman is regarded as a perfect symbol of selflessness and loyalty. Worship of Hanuman helps the individual to counter the bad karma borne out of selfish action, and grants the believer fortitude and strength in his or her own trials during the journey of life. Hanuman is also invoked in fights against sorcery and protective amulets depicting him are extremely popular among his devotees. -The Hindu God Hanuman - Monkey God and Hero of the Ramayana
At this juncture in time, consciousness is in crisis, discernment, bravery and balance is needed to uplift our hope and faith in the goodness of humanity. Coupled with sun in Aries, there is a lot of blinded self-interest and preservation shaping our values, meaning "Me before We". As hundreds of devotees chant and visit Hanuman temples around the world to celebrate Hanuman Jayanti, we can gain insight from these mythic tales to support our soul's evolution through these intense times. Like Hanuman who leaps and bounds across oceans and obstacles, sacrificing himself for Sita and Rama the perfect marriage of masculine and feminine archetypes, we too can face our fears, breakdown old paradigms, and stand for truth with our hearts equally open.
Hanuman is often depicted with his chest ripped open, projecting his heart's beloved, blood and all. The deep emotional vulnerability, heightened by the tides of the Libra full moon, is calling you to feel what is in your heart. Source your power from what you are most passionate about. What could you devote yourself to without compromise? Be mindful, with Mercury in retrograde, communications can get crossed and passions can also trigger misunderstandings. We could preemptively strike without discrimination, contemplation, and consideration. Base primal reactions, judgements, and habits can elevate tension and aggression, choose instead to harness and transform these energies through reflection, yoga, meditation, or chanting with Bhakti (love/devotion).
The mantra, Om Hum Hanumate Namah, can fortify self-mastery, uncompromising love, and fearlessness. If you were to take a leap of faith, where would your heart land? What might you do if you had all the resources you needed, physically, materially, spiritually?
Libra is shifting us towards balance. As masculinity learns to become intuitively strong, spirited, and centred, the feminine energy is strengthening her resourcefulness to receive love and birth new ideas that command equality and sacred rite for all. Face how you are honouring your power, and how is it playing out in your relationships. Who's dominating who? What may you be projecting onto the other that you won't acknowledge within yourself?
Use the following Moon Medicine Wheel this week to integrate the energies of the moon into a transformative quality, rather than feeling stuck or confronted by circumstance, life, or relationships.
